Kun Opera ——Six Hundred Years of Tradition
Kun Opera ,also known as “ Kunqiang”, “Kunju”,which is mainly devoted to chuanqi(romance). With a history of six hundred years, Kun Opera is considered as “the mother of many other types of traditional operas”. It was born in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province and had reached its peak of popularity by the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty.Kun Opera falls into Qupai style, being very particular with literary rules and meters, its main instruments is flute, and the main roles are Sheng(male characters), Dan(female characters), Jing(“painted face” characters), Mo(main male characters), Chou(clown), Wai(old male characters), Tie(old female characters).
